And for the record, which im sure you think otherwise... I have more respect for the early black blues pioneers than I? do Elvis.

My opinion wasn't based entirely on record sales... Read my other comments. I simply gave more support for why people call Elvis the King of rock and roll. How many records one sales is not irrelevant it's an accurate measure? of the public opinion, explain how it's irrelevant please. I'm well aware of Jay - Z breaking Elvis' record. He's a monumental figure in rap music and he can write much better than Elvis can. Elvis like Chuck stood on the shoulders of Giants before him.

Also, Jay-Z broke Elvis's record for most consecutive #1 albums. You prepared to say he's better than Elvis lol? That's what I? thought.
By: jehosafats3000. on 04 Apr 12, 06:22:14
Uh, how many records he sold is irrelevant. You expose how fickle you are putting such a high premium on record sales. Elvis himself was very deferential to to the pioneers of Rock. Sadly, a lot of his fans can't appreciate that. Reminds me of something Slash said years back:? "As a musician, I've always been amused that I'm both British and black; particularly because so many American musicians seem to aspire to be British while so many British musicians went to such great pains to be black."

Expose what? The fact that Elvis outsold every other artist on the planet other than the Beatles? What's so hard to understand here? The reason why Elvis is considered the King of Rock and? Roll is because of the vast majority of people liking him. Math rules the universe, don't believe what they teach at the local Junior College.

Album sales is an effective measure of the public's opinion. There's really no need for subjective hippie philosophy in the discussion. Numbers tell the story. If millions of people? prefer one over the other... I'll let you figure out the rest.

And queen is the queen and Prince is the princess. Aretha Franklin would then be the princess.?

I don't understand how people can like modern? music like rap and hip/hop. I like this music and I'm a freshman in highschool. I like music you can dance to!
By: nickshorty. on 28 Mar 12, 08:04:33
All I have to say to that is if you just look at album sales then you have a very narrow minded view on what makes music good. It really is a subjective matter as how one measures success is a very debatable topic, I personally believe that just because one group or person creates more of some form of capital does not measure their? superiority. The is the very essence of capitalist ideals, and to me personally it's lacking in spirit. Regardless, to argue one be better is unnecessary and futile.
By: xXxDriftingCowboyxXx. on 28 Mar 12, 01:50:09
What it really comes down to is album sales. That will FACTUALLY tell the story. Elvis is the 2nd best selling artist of all time, just behind the Beatles. Chuck is great? but to compare him with Elvis? Come now, if he was better, his album sales would show it.
By: xXxDriftingCowboyxXx. on 28 Mar 12, 01:45:16
Elvis was not the white version of Chuck lol. Elvis is just as big today as he was back then. There are no singers today that could even hold a candle to him. I dare you to name 12 other gospel singers better than Elvis. Chuck Berry also took from other musicians. Chuck was without question the better songwriter, Elvis I suppose was too busy to even attempt it. And if you think Chuck was a better singer than Elvis you must REALLY like Chuck. Elvis is still outselling Chuck on? records btw.
By: CallousCarter. on 23 Mar 12, 20:44:11
Elvis got a record deal before Chuck did but his first hit came in 1956 where as chucks was in 1955. I don't think you could say one copied the other, they were both influenced by the beginnings of the rockabilly scene and both helped develop it and bring into the mainstream. Personally I think Chuck is the superior artist, his song writing particularly his lyrics is incredible and he's the better? guitar player as well. I like both of their voices though but still prefer chuck.
By: CallousCarter. on 23 Mar 12, 20:37:51
Of course you can compare chuck and Elvis. Elvis was pretty much a white version of chuck which is probably why he sold more records at the time. Elvis covered 8, yes 8 of chuck berries songs. He didn't have a voice from god and i could name you dozens of better gospel singers. Not saying Elvis was bad he still knocks? spots off most of the "musicians" around today, but i think he was overrated and I'd say chuck is a much better songwriter, guitarist and I also prefer his singing as well.

Berry did not compose the guitar riffs that became his signature? sound. The intros to his songs, especially the famous Johnny B Goode intro, was taken note for note from Louis Jordan's lead guitarist Carl Hogan. Check out youtube video: Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five - Aint That Just Like A Woman Berry did his share of "borrowing" as much as any other artist.
